As much as there is cold to bear in winter, in other places around the world a lack of rainfall determines the foliage. One such interesting species is the Joshua tree, named by a group of Morman settlers crossing the Mojave desert in the 19th century. These settlers used these trees for fencing as well as fuel for their steam engines to process ore.
